Originally designed to connect different telephone systems to each other while keeping their respective power supplies isolated, Audio Transformers are still commonly used to interconnect professional audio systems or system components.

Audio transformers are specifically designed for use in audio circuits. They are used to block radio frequency interference or the DC component of an audio signal, to split or join audio signals, or to provide impedance matching between high and low impedance circuits. Essentially the purpose of an "interstage" audio transformer is to isolate the DC and couple the signal - with minimal loss. The transformer windings look like short circuits to DC, but are viewed as complex impedances to the AC signal.
